I don't have the link, sorry Monica. It's undeniable, though, that they're doing it – and choosing your friends for you. You're probably right about the reason; it saves them resources.

This is why I heavily use the groups functionality to filter my news feed. Instead of hiding people (blacklisting), I use groups for family, college, career, and gamers as whitelists.

Can you share the original link where Facebook says this? There's no information online and Mashable doesn't seem to have covered it. I'm assuming if they are going this route it's because of the rapid adoption rate.
