I agree with Michael, it's very interesting to look at reviews (and reviewers) from this perspective. Considering that I write reviews (sometimes for products Ed sends my way), I'm glad that many of the things I consider in trying to be a good reviewer were brought up here.

I will also add that recently my review of the Eberron Player's Guide seems to have done quite well, getting comments from people who literally said it convinced them to buy the book. It's funny that as a reviewer I get no actual benefit out of convincing people to buy something, but it still makes me feel good when I like a product and I've helped guide other people to it as well.

Implies the old expression: "Any publicity is good publicity"

I don't disagree with that notion, but there are also a lot of gamers out there who will cling to the strongest impression offered by someone else rather than create their own.

Consider the 'mature' gamer, the one who has a family, full-time job, home mortgage, is on a tight budget, not a lot of free time, etc. In general, they don't have as much *disposable* income as younger, single gamers. They sometimes depend on these reviews before purchasing a product, especially at the cost of some of these products. Buyers remorse can be pretty heavy, especially when you spend $30 on a game or supplement that ends up not being what you wanted or just awful.

It's easy to shirk off a bad review, but it's difficult to recapture those who might have been influenced by it.

The question remains, "What can you do about it?" I think Fred Hicks hit the nail on the head. There's not much you can do but cordially accept the criticism, offer a few corrections and clarifications, and move on.

At best, a publisher might post an article of its own to clarify misconceptions or offer a free preview of the points of concern.

I like reviews both good or bad. I do not chase them. Life is top short and my time too precious to keep up with if a book is reviewed or not. I send copies out and if I get one I get one. I'd rather make good games. Still I am strange that way.

Good article, Ed. I like how you approached the topic of reviews from the publisher's perspective. Too often we hear about reviews only from the reader's perspective, but the fact is reviews have different uses for different people.

ME

Disclosure: I do reviews for Game Cryer and I kinda like Ed.
