Ten Minutes From Normal by Karen Hughes very an inspiring book. I especially liked seeing the author’s struggle between her obligations at work and to her family – and especially the look she gives into her relationship with her son. I am a new parent, and I sometimes wonder at how well I will do. Seeing someone else go through those same doubts and fears is very reassuring. The tone of the book was at once firm and gentle – leaving me with a great impression of Mrs. Hughes’ character. I believe this is because of her deep faith in God. It has inspired me to strive for a more Christ-like life, myself. Examples are important for everyone. The ultimate example may be Christ, but it doesn’t hurt to have someone like Karen in the world to help show the way.
Mrs. Hughes is older than I am, has a different upbringing, works in a different profession, and is a woman – and yet I found myself drawn to most everything she had to say. After thinking about it, I came to the conclusion that is because of what we have in common – we are both Christians, parents, and conservatives. Common ground can work wonders for people of different backgrounds. I sometimes wonder if, instead on focusing on our differences, what we could do if we focused on what binds us together. Male or female, black or white, conservative or liberal, old or young – we are all human beings. We all want what’s best for ourselves and those close to us. We all wish to experience “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
